George Michael
About

When I hear the name George Michael, immediately I think: icon, singular talent, and of course, heartthrob. An English singer, songwriter and producer, he rose to worldwide fame alongside Andrew Ridgeley as part of pop-duo Wham! Hits in their catalogue include “Last Christmas” and “Wake Me Up Before You Go Go!” Michael also went on to have a hugely successful and critically acclaimed solo career. His debut album Faith won Album of the Year at the 31st Grammy Awards and in the same year he was named Best British Male Solo Artist at the Brit Awards, an award he would go on to win again in 1997.

As a global superstar he had to come to terms with his sexuality in the public eye, at a time when homophobia was commonplace, especially in the media. Despite this, he remained unapologetic about who he was. He spoke publicly about being in an open relationship and how he loved casual sex, in doing so rejecting the respectability politics that would have gay men be sexless and sanitised in order to be palatable. This, along with his refusal to dilute the parts of himself that people didn't like, has made him an inspiration for many.

He was also well known for his charity, notably supporting the Terrence Higgins Trust and MacMillan Cancer Support, and was also outspoken about issues such as the Iraq War and lack of pay for NHS workers.

When he was tragically found dead in his home at 53, many stories of his warmth and goodwill circulated online, including how he privately donated millions to Childline and volunteered anonymously at a homeless shelter. These are a testament to his kindness, which was present even when no one was watching.

He shone bright with his talent and effortless, expressive style. He inspired many with his radical self-acceptance, outspoken political views and defiance of societal expectations. His consistent, quiet dedication to helping others exposes an admirable humility. Together, it makes for an enduring legacy of an unforgettable gay icon with a heart of gold.
